    Gionee Elife S5.5 Review

Buy Gionee Elife S5.5: MobileIn the not-so-distant past, Chinese phones had a terrible reputation. They were either knock-offs or just plain cheap phones filled with multiple pointless and annoying features - remember phones with five speakers? You won't see as many of those around now, but for some reason, the reputation has persisted.
With the entry of brands like Oppo and Gionee in India, and the impending entry of Xiaomi, premium Chinese phone-makers and their offerings might actually be able to change public perception. Barring a few problems with the software, we were impressed with the flagship Gionee Elife E7.
Gionee's Elife S5.5, the younger sibling of that phone, is touted as the slimmest smartphone in the world. It features top-of-the-line specifications too. The phone managed to catch our fancy and we recently received a unit to review in our lab. We find out if it can stand strong against the big league of smartphones.

Get Facebook's Chat Heads in Chrome with Faces.im Review

Facebook's Chat Heads let you read and reply to messages when using its mobile app without leaving your news feed or whatever it is you happen to be doing in Facebook when a message arrives. Now, a Chrome extension called Facsimile (not be be confused with fascism) brings Facebook's chat heads to the desktop

With Faces.im installed, when you get a Facebook message, a Chat Head pops up along the right edge of the page you are viewing in Chrome. Just as with Facebook's mobile app, the Chat Head features your friend's Facebook profile picture. Mouse over the Chat Head and a small window appears to the left with the sender's username and the text of his or her most recent message.

Unlike chat heads in Facebook's mobile app that open a drop-down window, clicking on Faces.im's chat heads in Chrome opens up a separate window with the message. From this window, you can access all of your Facebook messages. You can also open this Facebook messenger window by clicking the button that the extension installs to the right of Chrome's URL bar.
Faces.im's Chat Heads remain visible on any new tabs that you open in Chrome. They feature a small X at roughly 2 o'clock on the dial that you can click to close them, saving you from having to drag them to the bottom of your screen as you do with Chat Heads in the Facebook mobile app.
Faces.im is a useful extension for getting in and out of Facebook messages without leaving your current tab and heading to Facebook proper, where all manner of distraction exists.

Sony Xperia M2 review Dual M for midrange review

We are about to explore the Xperia M2, a smartphone with an agenda of its own. Task number 1 is to upgrade the popular Xperia M. Check. The M2 brings a bigger screen (and ups the resolution), the chipset is better and the camera resolution is higher. The M2 also adds LTE and a higher battery capacity. Task number 2 is to give Sony an extra bit of quality against the likes of Moto G. We'll see about that.
Sony are busy adding number tags to model names, which doesn't speak highly of their copywriting skills, but the upgrades have so far been - at the very least - solid. We've seen the new season's flagships, phone and tablet, and the budget-friendly Xperia E1. The same applies to the Xperia M2 just as well.

    Sony Xperia M2 official pictures
Sony fans have grown accustomed to getting high build quality and great looks regardless of the price range. The Xperia M2 readily delivers - but pays due attention to the innards as well. It adds a couple of extra CPU cores to what the original Xperia M has. The Snapdragon 400 chipset represents a good balance between price and performance. A 4.8" qHD screen, 8MP stills and 1080p videos, and rich connectivity options are also on the spec sheet.

    Key features

    • 4.8" qHD TFT, 229 pixels per inch, Gorilla Glass 3, ambient light sensor
    • LTE connectivity
    • The Xperia M2 Dual has Dual SIM with Dual Call support (but without the LTE connectivity)
    • Android 4.3 Jelly Bean (planned upgrade to Android 4.4 KitKat)
    • Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 chipset with quad-core 1.2GHz Cortex-A7 processor, Adreno 305 GPU and 1GB of RAM
    • 8MP camera, single LED flash, 1080p video recording, dedicated hardware shutter key
    • VGA front-facing camera with video recording
    • 8GB of built-in storage, expandable via the microSD card slot
    • Active noise cancellation with a secondary microphone
    • 2,300 mAh battery; STAMINA Power Saving Mode

    Main disadvantages

    • Resolution is relatively low for this screen size
    • No Android KitKat on launch
    • Non user-replaceable battery
The Sony Xpria M2 sounds quite convincing on paper. A modern midranger, almost by the book. The OmniBalance design Sony introduced with the Xperia Z back in 2013 rules out a removable battery, but we guess that's the price to pay for looks and feel above the pay grade.

The lack of KitKat will likely be sorted soon enough - the Xperia M2 update is already in development and should be out in the summer. That leaves us with the issue of screen resolution. Now qHD certainly sounds on the low side when spread across a 4.8" diagonal but the truth is, it's probably enough for many. We are sure a lot of you will go for size over pixel density - especially at the right price.

Vertu Signature Touch goes official with high specs and price

The manufacturer of luxury smartphones Vertu took the wraps off its latest creation, the Signature Touch. The Android KitKat device packs high-end specs and the usual whopping price tag which kicks off at a cool £6,750 (about $11,300)

Vertu Signature Touch sports Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 SoC with 2.3GHz quad-core CPU, 2GB of RAM, and 64GB of memory. The handset’s display is a 4.7” 1080p unit covered by sapphire glass.
The camera department of the handset is where things get really interesting. The device features a 13MP camera unit with dual-LED flash, tuned by the photography powerhouse Hasselblad. The front-facing snapper is a 2.1MP unit.
Hasselblad is not the only co-branding partner in the Vertu Signature Touch. The smartphone’s audio is tuned by Bang & Olufsen. The audio products’ manufacturer also supplies an ultra-premium over-ear headset and wireless speaker as additional accessories.
Connectivity options of the device include LTE in addition to the standard high-end smartphone fare. The device is powered by a 2,275 mAh battery and supports Qi wireless charging.
Out of the box, the Vertu Signature Touch will boot Android 4.4 KitKat. Naturally, Vertu’s exclusive Concierge service will also be on board.

Samsung Galaxy S5 vs LG G2 Review

This has been going on for a while now but, as both makers are keener than ever to outdo each other in the race to the Android top, their flagships are only getting more and more alike. The biggest difference is now in the timing, which is also part of the game - and that's what's made it actually more interesting to watch. The two rival Korean flagships are travelling in different orbits - only to meet on one's way down and another's way up.
Back when it launched, the LG G2 was the embodiment of LG's determination to better the Samsung Galaxy S4 in every way possible. The HTC One and the Sony Xperia Z were reduced to collateral damage - the eyes of the LG G2 set on the main target alone.
Fast-forward a few quarters, and the G2 is on its way ... out. We wouldn't say down unless it's down in history as one of the best things to come out of LG's handheld labs for quite a while. And it sure is going to try and cash in one last time, especially now that it's still in perfectly good shape and the new crop of flagships are charging big buck.

On the way in, or up, or whatever you think fits, the Galaxy S5 has leapt ahead of its predecessor with water
resistance, a superior camera, slightly bigger screen, a fingerprint scanner, beefier battery, the new Snapdragon 801 chipset and 4K video recording among other things. That means the LG G2 is, at least in some departments, lagging behind as well.

Samsung Galaxy S5 over LG G2:

    • Snapdragon 801 over Snapdragon 800
    • 16 MP 1/2.6" camera over 13 MP 1/3.06"
    • Faster, phase-detect autofocus
    • 2160p video recording over 1080p
    • MicroSD card slot
    • IP67-certified for water and dust resistance
    • Fingerprint scanner
    • Heart-rate sensor
    • Thinner - 8.1 mm over 8.9 mm
    • Wireless charging (varies by market)

LG G2 over Samsung Galaxy S5

    • Bigger display: 5.2" over 5.1"
    • Smaller and lighter body
    • Optical image stabilization
    • FM Radio
    • Bigger battery - 3000mAh over 2800mAh
    • Much cheaper
The Samsung Galaxy S5 has the advantage of time. The tables have turned and it's now the LG flagship's turn to be outsmarted. Without being a dramatic step forward, the chipset is a tad faster than the older generation. The camera is a serious improvement though, with a much bigger sensor, higher resolution, the world's first phase-detect autofocus in a smartphone and the stellar 2160p video recording. The microSD card is consistently a point in Samsung's favor and water resistance is a nice touch. The heart rate monitor may not be appreciated by everyone but the latest TouchWiz UI has received a fresh coat of paint under Android KitKat, while keeping the impressive feature set.
One would think that such a long list of pros spells a walkover for the Galaxy S5 but we wouldn't be so sure. LG's creative design and excellent ergonomics are still an important asset against an opponent whose styling is a major source of controversy. The G2 is slightly thicker but only just - and it's got a bigger screen to show for it. The impressively slim bezels secure the G2's lead in terms of screen per surface ratio.
The G2 is a solid cameraphone too and one of the few to offer optical image stabilization. We'll be testing how well the digital variety compares to OIS in our camera comparison. Then there's the higher battery capacity, which will also be put to the test now that both contenders are running KitKat. Ultimately though, the G2's biggest advantage comes down to money. The flagship has been out for a while and goes for half the S5's price.

The LG G2 vs. Samsung Galaxy S5 vs. Samsung Galaxy Note 3
But there's more to flagship phones than just numbers and specs. How we choose a phone is a combination of things, some of which impossible to put a price on. Sometimes we'll do the math, and if we're lucky there's chemistry.
But luck will have nothing to do with anything when you're choosing between Samsung's and LG's - which for some stands for the best in Android. Tough call - but that's how we like them. Let's get started, shall we.
